Katrina exhibits featured in Creative Loafing and AJC

Take a look at Cinque Hicks' column on the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the art world, and how that is playing out in three Atlanta exhibits, including Spruill Gallery, this month.

In late August 2005, the levees on the canals south of Lake Pontchartrain gave way and plunged New Orleans into the contemporary art world. If that sounds like a creepy thing to say, it's not my idea. New Orleans gallery owner Arthur Roger and others told the Christian Science Monitor last year how the storm yanked New Orleans artists into a conversation with the world outside the Mississippi Delta as never before, prompting new art that was less insular and somehow more globally relevant. Brad Pitt showed up with his pink houses, and curator Dan Cameron launched Prospect.1, a citywide art biennial cut from the cloth of the Venice Biennale. Nearly overnight, the city joined the list of nationally significant art destinations.

As anyone who has picked up a copy of Goodbye, Babylon or Screamin’ & Hollerin’ the Blues can tell you, Archie brings a true artist’s attention to detail in her designs. These multilayered, ornate packages work to evoke the obsessive, nostalgic moods associated with record collecting and archiving. Speakeasy with Ting Ying Han

Creative Loafing interviewed Spruill Gallery's Emerging Artist, Ting Ying Han.

When Ting Ying Han left Taipei, Taiwan, a few years ago to pursue art in the U.S., the 23-year-old left behind more than a city. In many ways, Han also shed her identity as she — and her family and friends — knew it. She gladly shook off the restraints of her rigid Chinese upbringing to freely pursue art and sculpture in Atlanta. But the metamorphosis hasn't been without its challenges. Han leads a double life of sorts, her family ties becoming increasingly tenuous as more time passes. It's not a huge surprise, then, that Han's work fixates on family, objects and spatial relationtionships. "Missing," her meticulously crafted rice table now on view in Spruill Gallery's Emerging Artists 2009, is a heartfelt meditation on absence.

Speakeasy with Hope Cohn

In case you missed it, Creative Loafing's Curt Holman interviewed Director Hope Cohn for Speakeasy this week.

From a restored farmhouse in Dunwoody, the Spruill Gallery offers a quaint oasis of culture among the strip malls, giant restaurant chains and fancy condo complexes. The current exhibit PLAY, on view through April 25, showcases the lighthearted facets of creativity from more than a dozen artists, including Avantika Bawa, Barrett Feldman, Jason Fulford and Staci Stone. As Hope Cohn observes her first anniversary at Spruill, the exhibitions director explains PLAY's origins and how she expects the gallery to maintain its accessibility when its new, larger facility opens in 2010.

Critic's pick

Gallery Director Hope Cohn received Creative Loafing's Critic's Pick for "Best Changing of the Guard."

Though we'll miss former Spruill Art Center exhibitions director Julia Fenton, we're excited to ring in the reign HOPE COHN. We love that she pulled together last spring's Breaking New Ground in a matter of weeks, assembling artists and ideas at a moment's notice, even having a new room built onto the facility to house some of the works. We're also looking forward to the construction due to begin on Cohn's watch, which will expand the organization's facilities by several thousand square feet. These are exciting times for the out-of-the-way space. And no, we didn't miss the apt symbolism of Sarah Emerson's new mural gracing the gallery grounds – a cresting wave in a bright sea.
